Thought for 2008

As we look forward to our new year, it's also a good time to look back, to remember how far we've come and how quickly we are moving into the future. That's why I chose this week's quote from What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of America, 1815-1848, by Daniel Walker Howe.

Quote of the Week: Whose handcuffs do you wear?

I found this week's quote while going through materials I collected while living in Ghana in 2002. It's very evocative, I think: "You are the slave of he whose handcuffs you wear."

This seemed particularly appropriate in light of Black Friday and the handcuffs we place on ourselves as consumers. Whose handcuffs do you wear?
