Antofagasta displays a present and immediate future that look auspicious, based on the mining industry and the current copper price. Something of the sort was felt during the golden years of saltpeter, until the arrival of synthetic nitrate and that fleeting wealth only left deserted mining camps and mounting unemployment. It is feared that scientific and technologic advances may create copper substitutes. Besides, mother lodes do run out of mineral and, despite exploration efforts, within a few decades the decay of our current development model may begin.
