Going on Hiatus for Obama New Media

hace 1 año
I will not be writing on this blog for a while. The reason is that I have accepted the position of New Media Operations Manager at Obama for America. In this position I will be assisting the Director and Deputy Director of New Media with project management and doing logistics work for the department. Part of the hiring agreement was that I not maintain a personal blog while I am working at the campaign (not that I will have any time to blog anyway). So, happy Independence Day and see you on November 5th. In the mean time, buy and tee or bumper sticker to show your support. We need your support to win. Yes we can!

Internet & Democracy@the Global Voices...

hace 1 año
This past week the Internet & Democracy Project was kind enough to sponsor my attendance at the Global Voices Citizen Media Summit in Budapest. It is an international gathering of the members and fans of the international blogging project Global Voices, which curates the world's blogospheres in order to increase cross-cultural understanding. This year, the summit focused on limitations of free speech online, both technical forms of censorship like filtering and offline forms of censorship like illegal imprisonment. This touches on the themes of the Internet & Democracy project in so far as freedom of expression is a key element of democratic societies. Without the ability to freely access information and discuss its relevance to public issues, it is impossible for citizens to make informed policy decisions and to determine where their own best interests lie. The online space, particularly (Leer más)

Going to the Global Voices Summit

hace 1 año
I will be going to the Global Voices Citizen Media Summit in Budapest this month to moderate a panel on Citizen Media and Online Free Speech (see more information below). Session 2: Citizen Media and Online Free Speech The innate structure of the Internet is free: a series of personal computers, servers, and routers that produce data and transmit it around the world in seconds based on a simple series of universal protocols. It took human intervention to cage the Internet. For the second session of the Global Voices Summit we invite you to explore the tension between freedom and repression currently being fought online by activists in Kenya, Iran, Egypt, Morocco, Singapore, and Hong Kong. While the Internet has allowed Kenyans to take action during a dark moment of their country’s history and fueled the pro-democracy blogger movement in (Leer más)

The Politics of Linguistics in the...

I thought this image was an interesting commentary on how digital trends are outpacing offline politics. Although anti-immigration activists demand that English become the US's official language, on the Internet traditional English is radically changing due to the rise of user generated content like the image above and LOLcats. This new democratic form of content creation is the source of new slang and norms of spelling and grammar (like the word "serosly"), which is being developed at a rate that I would imagine is unprecidented. When conservative demand that we protect our American culture from change, they forget that our culture is changing more quickly than ever before because there are more people that are able to create culture: bloggers, YouTube video creators, digital activists. If conservatives were to look back at the culture that they think they are protecting, (Leer más)

Microsoft's Power Fades as Computer...

hace 1 año
From today's NY Times: With a bid for Yahoo, Microsoft was trying to buy its way out of the problem. It was a controversial step and a gamble, but at least it was a big move. Now, there is no clear prospect of a quick fix for Microsoft, as the center of gravity in computing continues to move away from the personal computer, Microsoft’s stronghold, and to the Internet. read more... image: www.adenhepburn.com

Literary Mashup

I just found the site We Tell Stories.  It mashes up stories and maps, taking you through space as well as through narrative, an unusually poetic application of the map mashup meme. Thanks, Ethan.

David Weinberger on Fame Culture We...

hace 1 año
Last Friday I went to ROFLCon, the “rolling on the floor laughing” convention. It was a two-day event organized by an enterprising group of Harvard undergrads (and sponsored by the Berkman Center) to celebrate and explore internet memes and culture. Why is this an appropriate topic for blog on digital activism, you might ask. Although the conference was ostensibly about funny Internet memes it was really about how Internet is fueling the growth of user-generated culture - cultural democracy, if you will. Internet fame, which Berkman fellow David Weinberger discussed in his keynote address, is a perfect example of this new cultural democracy, in which ordinary people, not resource-rich broadcasters, are now able to identify a new class of famous people, redefine the parameters of fame, and otherwise re-tool the way fame operates in our culture. What will the political (Leer más)
